Press Release
JG Summit capex to rise 23% in 2014
JG SUMMIT Holdings, Inc. expects to raise capital spending by 23% this year to P44.2 billion to help its units exploit “very positive” growth opportunities.
“The economy is clearly growing very well and we’d like to take part by investing substantial amounts,” JG Summit President and Chief Operating Officer Lance Y. Gokongwei told reporters yesterday on the sidelines of the group’s shareholders’ meeting at the Crowne Plaza in the Ortigas district.
Some 32% or P14.1 billion will be invested in airline subsidiary Cebu Air, Inc.; 36% or P16 billion will go to Robinsons Land Corp.; 21% or P9 billion will be allocated to snack food unit Universal Robina Corp.; and 11% or P5 billion will be set aside for JG Summit Petrochemical Corp.
“The main driver of the economic growth of the country is consumption, where most of our businesses are anchored on,” JG Summit said in its annual report.
Universal Robina will finish construction of its fourth factory in Central Vietnam by the fourth quarter. It is also building a plant in Myanmar, which will start operations next year.
Robinsons Land’s projects due for launch will generate potential sales of P6 billion to P8 billion. It has already opened five out of seven malls scheduled to open this year, and completed two new office buildings in the Ortigas Central Business District -- Cyberscape Alpha and Cyberscape Beta.
Construction has begun for another office building -- Tera Tower -- in its upcoming mixed-use complex in Quezon City, known as Bridgetowne.
JG Summit’s naptha cracker plant in Batangas, operated by JG Summit Olefins Corp., will start commercial operations in the second half of the year.
JG Summit also expects to “significantly increase” its revenue stream now that it has a 27% stake in power supplier Manila Electric Co. after a P72-billion buy-in last year.
Mr. Gokongwei said the group is looking at options to refinance around P9 billion worth of long-term debt that will mature starting November.
Asked about possible effect of increasing prices of raw materials, Mr. Gokongwei said: “Important materials are generally expensive, including oils and fats and coffee beans. In some products, we do have to raise prices because costs are going up.”
He noted, however, that the price hike will be “relatively muted,” within the 3% to 4% range.
JG Summit also declared a dividend of 20 centavos in cash per common share, payable on Aug. 12.
